Meet Arran MacDonald
Owner of Hecra Painting
From a Summer Job to Nearly a Decade of Painting
Arran MacDonald didn’t originally set out to build a career in painting. He got his start with a summer painting job and quickly found that he enjoyed the work. What began as a way to spend the summer turned into something he wanted to keep pursuing, so he continued painting while finishing his university degree.
The work kept coming, and what started small gradually grew into Hecra Painting Inc. in 2020. Arran has now been painting for almost a decade. Along the way, he’s worked with homeowners on projects of different sizes, learned how different surfaces and products affect the finished result, and developed an approach that starts with understanding what each homeowner actually wants from the project. Today, he works alongside a team of painters serving homeowners throughout the Burlington area and surrounding communities.
Helping Homeowners Make Sense of Their Painting Options
Arran’s experience covers the practical decisions that come up before and during a painting project. That includes assessing the condition of the surface, choosing products for a particular application, deciding on colours and finishes, and figuring out what level of preparation a space needs before painting begins.
His hands-on knowledge includes:
- Interior painting
- Exterior painting
- Wall painting
- Ceiling painting
- Trim painting
- Cabinet painting
- Paint and product selection
- Colour guidance
Rather than treating every home the same way, Arran takes a consultative approach. He wants to know what homeowners like, what they don’t like, and what they hope to get out of the finished space. From there, he can recommend an approach that fits the home and the project.
That applies to product choices as well. The team works with paints from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore, with the specific product depending on the customer and the application. When homeowners aren’t sure about colour, there are also options for additional guidance, including virtual colour consultations and, depending on the size of the project, in-home help from a designer.
Painting Knowledge Built on Real Projects
One thing Arran has learned over the years is that painting questions rarely have one answer that works for every house.
Take cost, for example. The price of a painting project depends on what needs to be painted, the current condition of the surfaces, the preparation involved, and what the homeowner wants from the finished result. The same goes for timelines. While many projects can fall within a one-to-five-day range, the actual schedule depends on the scope and condition of the home.
That experience shapes how Arran talks with homeowners. Instead of jumping straight to a recommendation, he looks at the details first. It gives homeowners a chance to talk through their priorities and understand why a certain product, colour, or painting approach might make sense for their space.
It’s also part of what keeps him interested in the work. Arran saw an opportunity to bring more care and communication to an industry that can sometimes leave homeowners unsure about what they’re getting. For him, a good painting experience isn’t only about putting a new colour on the wall. It’s about giving homeowners useful guidance and making choices based on their particular home.
